The Team

Ricardo Orduña CPA

Ricardo completed his studies at the University of Houston with a Bachelors Degree of Accountancy in 1995.  During the last two years of his studies he spent the summers working in the Alaska fishing industry both in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea. Ricardo found that he was drawn to Alaska and after finishing his studies he took his first position as an accountant beginning his accounting career in the most northern place of the United States: Barrow, Alaska.  He began to quickly contribute to the North Slope Borough with accounting and tax technical skills as he worked for the Housing and Property Management Department in accounts receivable.

From Barrow Ricardo moved to Nome where he took a Controller position with Nome Joint Utilities; after the completion of several important infrastructure projects with the City of Nome he moved to Anchorage and began working for Mikunda, Cottrell & Co. with the audit partner who handled the Nome Joint Utilities account. This allowed him to begin work toward obtaining his CPA license; here he was exposed to both governmental and non-profit organizations as he did extensive travel throughout Alaska performing audits.

Ricardo eventually joined PriceWaterhouse Cooper in California which gave him the opportunity to gain greater exposure to publicly traded corporate audits. It was during his time in California that Ricardo became determined to obtain his CPA license he joined Armando Martinez and Co. CPAs, a company that would give him the ability to study more for the CPA exam.  In 2002 Ricardo passed all four parts of the CPA examination and obtained his license in California; this allowed him to then acquire his license in both Colorado and Alaska later in his career. He has maintained the license in all three states.

After obtaining his CPA license Ricardo felt it would be beneficial for him to attain industry experience that would continue to round out his portfolio; he decided on an opportunity that brought him to Colorado to work for ConAgra Foods as an Assistant Controller. The division of the company, United Agri Products, was located in Greeley, Colorado. In this position Ricardo implemented audit programs and performed surprise internal audits throughout the United States and Canada at UAP’s agricultural store locations. Ricardo then took an opportunity to join Swift & Company as a Sarbanes-Oxley Manager also in Greeley, Colorado and traveled to several parts of the country coordinating and managing the Sarbanes-Oxley effort.

In 2004 after years of audit, accounting and tax experience Ricardo felt the call of Alaska once again.  He decided to open his own Accounting and Tax practice shortly after returning to Alaska.  In Alaska Ricardo performed contract work for one of the largest native corporations; at ASRC Energy Services and Olgoonik Inc.  With his work at these companies he was able to broaden his experience in operations now working with both Oil & Gas and Construction companies.  He was also able to provide one of the largest telecommunication companies in the State of Alaska, GCI, with Accounting and Sarbanes Oxley Internal Documentation support.  In addition Ricardo helped facilitate GCI’s purchase of Alaska Digitel; he travelled between Alaska and Tennessee to transfer knowledge to the Anchorage employees as the merger took place. In addition to the industry opportunities he was able to work with growing mid-sized and small companies to develop their accounting systems as well as several individuals in their tax preparation.

Ricardo returned to Colorado in 2011, and has continued to sever clients there, also maintaining his ability to continue serving clients in Alaska. Ricardo hopes that his fluency in English and Spanish will allow him to work with business owners in the surrounding areas to help with all of their accounting and tax needs.
